Business Huawei buys Caliopa

Huawei has bought Valiopa, a four year-old silicon photonics start-up spun out of Imec and Ghent University.

Huawei will absorb Caliopa into it existing R&D centre in Belgium.

Huawei says the acquisition is part of its plan to increase its R&D effort in Europe.

Investors in Caliopa are Fidimec, Baekeland, PMV-Vinnof.

Caliopa has had €3.3m in venture funding since it was founded in 2009.
