The National Infrastructure Plan announced as part of the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement earlier this week includes a provision to give a £10 million prize to a town which agrees to be a test site for driverless cars.

The government’s intention is to cut through regulatory and legal barriers to the adoption of driverless cars and maintain the UK’s leading position as a developer of automotive technology.

Nissan and Daimler pin-point 2020 as the date for the introduction of such cars. Google says its driverless car will launch in 2017. Elon Musk of Tesla says he’ll have one on sale in 2016.
