Communications More on Alphasat, the largest European comms satellite

Just launched, Alphasat I-4A F4 was designed and built by Astrium as prime contractor and carries a new generation of advanced L-band mobile communications payload: for example, it can generate in excess of 200 spot beams, with digital beam forming capability – allowing it to make more use of spectrum-limited L-band.

“It features eight new-generation digital signal processors, which are able to manage multiple communications with maximum flexibility in both frequency and beam power allocation,” said Astrium.

The DSPs are in units known as ‘Integrated Processors’, one DSP per IP, whose primary function is the routing and combining of channels to the desired beam, and the forming of that beam. Digital processing is on 17 ASICs within each DSP.

“They are the key elements for the generation of spot beams and associated channel gain,” said Astrium.

In total , the eight processors weigh around 250kg and can perform more than 10 trillion calculations per second.

“The Digital Processing Module in each Integrated Processor includes providing Alphasat with a processing capacity which is unprecedented on board a commercial satellite,” said Astrium.

Alphasat also carries four technological demonstration payloads for ESA, including a laser communications terminal, developed under German space agency DLR contract, which is a precursor of the operational system for EDRS (European Data Relay System) enabling very high speed transmission between low earth orbit and geostationary earth orbit (LEO and GEO) “which will greatly enhance Earth observation applications and services”, said Astrium.

Design life is 15 years in orbit,

The satellite is also the first use of Alphabus, which at 22kW is claimed to be the most powerful platform on the market – a ‘bus’, in satellite parlance, is the satellite chassis, propulsion and navigation equipment – everything required to support a payload and keep it in the correct orbit.

Jointly developed by Astrium and Thales Alenia Space with ESA and CNES (French Space Agency) support, Alphabus can have a launch mass of up to 8.8 tonnes and a payload up to 2 tonnes.
