Manufacturing Micromachining laser delivers 5W

Coherent is claiming higher micromachining throughput from its Helios series of micromachining lasers when dicing, scribing and marking.

With a pulse repetition frequency of 50kHz and a pulse width of under 600ps, the lasers are intended for use in electronics and photovoltaic production.

“Specific applications include scribing of both thin-film and crystalline silicon solar cells – for example the selective opening of anti-reflection or passivation layers, dicing of silicon wafers, and precision marking,” claimed Coherent. “Helios is particularly well-suited to black marking of metals and marking of delicate materials which would suffer peripheral thermal damage with fibre lasers.”

Helios comes to Coherent through the acquisition of Innolight, and is now part of the firm’s family of short-pulse, diode-pumped solid-state (DPSS) lasers.

“These Q switched lasers are based on a master-oscillator power-amplifier [MOPA] architecture,” it said, claiming: “This two-stage approach provides the best balance of cost and power considerations.”

An integrated amplifier module allows power scaling up to 5W by swapping modules. At 50kHz pulse repetition rate, 5W is 100µJ per pulse.

M² is under 1.2 for a TEM00 circular beam, and wavelength is 1,064nm, with 532nm to follow.
