LED Engin is claiming the world’s highest UV flux from a small package with its latest 365nm LED.

The Californian company specialises in extracting a lot of heat from LED die in small packages using proprietary heatsinking techniques.

Aimed at UV curing – the acceleration of organic chemical reactions – in inks, adhesives and coatings for example – LZ1-00UV00 typically delivers 800mW of flux (UV is cannot be measured in lumens) from 2.9W drive (700mA 4.1V).

“The 365nm Gen 2 emitter produces its unprecedented irradiance from a 4.4×4.4mm footprint, the industry’s smallest high power UV LED package,” claimed the firm. “It is designed with a beam angle of 70˚ that results in more flux in the beam and maximum power density on target, at least four times higher than its closest competitor.”

Thermal resistance is 4.2°C/W, and the package is also available pre-mounted on a metal-cored star PCB (4.2+1.5°C/W), or a 11.4mm circular PCB (4.2+2.0°C/W).

700mA is the specified drive and data sheet absolute maximum ratings limit overdrive to 800mA, although some curves extend to 1A.

“Improved thermal derating produces 80% relative flux at 100˚C case temperature, which enables it to be driven at high drive currents and high junction temperatures: maximum 130˚C. The result allows system designers to employ a smaller heat sink with passive cooling,”

Other proposed applications are medical, sterilization, currency verification, forensic and contamination inspection.
